About:
photoED Magazine is an independent editorial print-based publication. With a focus on crafting a qualitative, accessible reader experience, the publication speaks to photography and art lovers at any level of their interest in the genre.
With origins in Canadian classrooms well before the dawn of virtual learning, photoED magazine started as a grassroots resource publication to feature local content, by and for Canadian educators.
An inspiration for the past 23+ years to professionals, students, educators, and enthusiasts alike, photoED is now the leading creative content publisher in the photography space in Canada spanning print, digital, and social media.
Featured Ottawa-based, POC, New Generation artist Stéphane Alexis notes:
“photoED Magazine has given me the opportunity to speak about my work and its connection to my community. The accreditation of being on the cover creates more opportunities for me. Together we create a space for photography to be explored in all its facets. photoED is a big player in this movement.”
PhotoED magazine’s editorial mandate is to showcase unique Canadian perspectives in lens-based storytelling. The publication’s vision is to create content that is accessible to the widest possible audience on a national level presenting new and under-represented voices of artists working with photography presented in a qualitative editorial package.
Publishing in the photography category has long been focused on promoting this lens-based craft to high-income male readers producing either academic conceptual art content or equipment-centric, commercial content. Their vision is to widen and democratize the magazine experience to move beyond this tradition of content for a patriarchal audience, towards an inclusive dialogue in accessible language that exists as; a high-quality printed legacy document; a digital platform to showcase more work; and a point of connection and celebration for the creative community through specially curated inspirational events.
Well over 900 Canadian photographers have contributed to the magazine since it began in 2001. The magazine is subscribed to by individuals and education institutions nationally, is available on newsstands in Canada, and as a digital replica through ISSUU.com, Press Reader, and Flipster.
Print publishing is a rare privilege that offers artists a legacy document of their work and story. The team loves how it feels to hold beautiful images in your hands, and they want to share this experience with everyone. They are the only Canadian photography publication on newsstands nationally.
They PUBLISH – in print and online: WELL CONSIDERED SUBMISSIONS, Fine art or commercial ORIGINAL creative works, Diverse interpretations on their themes that challenge us to see things in a new way.
