About:
Mary Buck’s journey into photography began at the tender age of eighteen when she first picked up a camera. Encouraged by her brother, a professional photographer, she started with an Olympus Rangefinder, which ignited her passion for capturing moments. “Photography has always been my way of capturing life’s beauty, and I’ve learned that it’s not just about pressing a button—it’s about telling a story,” says Mary.
Her early years were spent mastering the intricacies of film, which has had a lasting impact on her approach to photography. “The days of film taught me how to truly understand exposure, and that foundation shapes the way I work even now,” she reflects. This passion and dedication led Mary to establish Lightscapes Photographic Artwork in 1997, later expanding into a portrait studio focusing on family and children’s photography. Over the years, she developed deep, meaningful relationships with the families she worked with.
In 2009, as the recession unfolded, Mary pivoted her business to include DSLR camera instruction, a decision that would change the course of her career. “What began as a necessity soon turned into a calling,” she recalls. Through the years, Mary has mentored over 1,500 students, sharing her expertise and love for photography with those eager to learn. She believes in nurturing photographers at all levels, from beginners to seasoned enthusiasts, helping them unlock their creative potential.
Mary’s latest venture, Photography Immersion Experiences, offers private lessons, group workshops, and destination-based immersion photography workshops. The aim? To guide photographers on a transformative journey where they can dive into the craft, uncovering techniques and perspectives that turn ordinary moments into visual masterpieces. In her words, “Each workshop isn’t just about teaching techniques—it’s about finding your own voice behind the camera.”
When asked about her favourite photography spots, Mary shares that the Roswell Riverwalk, nestled in the heart of Roswell, Georgia, is a serene retreat filled with wildlife and natural beauty. And, if asked to choose a favourite place for photography, she’d pick San Diego, with its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture.
Mary’s love for photography shines through in every workshop, lesson, and interaction. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned photographer, Mary’s passion and expertise will inspire you to see the world through a new lens.
