James Alfred is a Vancouver-based architectural photographer with over 18 years of experience in capturing the beauty of buildings, interiors, and design. Since 2006, he has worked on projects across the province, shooting for a diverse range of clients, including renowned architects, developers, designers, and artists.
James’ passion for photography began long before his professional career in architecture. His journey into the field started with an undergraduate degree in Art, Theatre, and Set Design, followed by his discovery of Photoshop and digital art. It wasn’t until working as a Photoshop retoucher for a travel photography company that James found his true calling in architectural photography. He quickly learned the craft and began his own venture, focusing on creating high-quality images that capture the essence of natural light and thoughtful design.
When it comes to his photography style, James emphasises purity and naturalism, with a special focus on ambient light. “I aim for a natural, almost unnoticeable effect in my work, highlighting the beauty of design and architecture through the way light shapes a space,” he explains. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in his approach to shooting, processing, and retouching all his own images, ensuring consistency and artistry throughout each project.
Though James is well-known for his architectural and interior photography, his creative pursuits extend beyond these realms. Over the past few years, he has expanded into other creative fields, collaborating with artists and exploring more experimental work. “I’m constantly evolving, always looking to push my boundaries and celebrate beautiful, thoughtful design, no matter the medium,” he says.
James’ impressive client list includes companies such as Scott Construction, Kasian, Turner Construction, B+H Architects, and Mint Tiny House Company Ltd., to name just a few. His work has taken him to various locations across British Columbia, including the Lower Mainland, Whistler, Vancouver Island, and even the University of Amsterdam.
In his downtime, James enjoys exploring the great outdoors, capturing stunning landscape photographs, and spending time with his wife and three children.
